- Chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding the 50S ribosomal subunit. Chloramphenicol is effective against both Gram (+) and (-) bacteria and some mycobacteria. Resistance to chloramphenicol is conferred by the cat gene which encodes an acetyltransferase that acetylates and inactivates the antibiotic.
